Common Name(s): Cubic Butterfly Agave, Cube Agave, Ornamental Agave

Origin: A rare cultivated mutant from a breeding program (its parent species, Agave potatorum, is native to Mexico).

Description:
A true marvel of geometry, Agave potatorum ‘Cubic’ is one of the most uniquely strange and sought-after succulents in the collector’s world. It forms a compact, symmetrical rosette of thick, fleshy, triangular leaves that are so chunky and angular they give the plant an almost Cubic or pixelated appearance. The blue-grey to silvery-green leaves are armed with attractive reddish-brown teeth along the edges and a bold, sharp terminal spine. This bizarre cultivar appears surreal, making it a true sculptural piece for modern gardens, xeriscapes, or standout containers.

Care:
☀️ Light: Enjoys bright, indirect sunlight but can be acclimatised to full sun. In hot climates, 40%-60% shade cloth is recommended to maintain its best form.
💧 Water: Drought-tolerant. Water well during the warmer months (spring/summer) but keep the soil dry during its winter dormancy. Ensure the substrate dries completely between deep watering to prevent fatal rot.
🌱 Soil: Requires an exceptionally well-draining, gritty mix (e.g., cactus soil with pumice or akadama) to prevent waterlogging.
🌡️ Temp: Prefers warm temperatures (20-30°C). It is extremely sensitive to frost and humidity; ensure good airflow and protection from freezing temps.
🌸 Flowering: Like most agaves, it is monocarpic. It may take many years to bloom, producing a tall stalk of yellow flowers before dying, leaving behind offsets (pups).

Pet Friendly: ⚠️ Caution advised. Like most agaves, the sap contains compounds that can be irritating to pets. While not generally highly toxic, the sharp spines pose a physical risk. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

Propagation: Propagated by removing offsets (pups) that grow around the base of the mature plant. Best done in early spring using a sharp, clean knife.
