Common Name(s): Copper Pinwheel Aeonium, Sunburst Aeonium
Origin: Cultivated hybrid (Canary Islands parentage)
Description:
A living kaleidoscope of colour, Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ is one of the most striking variegated succulents you can grow. Its large, perfectly symmetrical rosettes are composed of spoon-shaped, fleshy leaves with a sunny yellow base and a bold green central stripe. When exposed to bright light, the leaf margins blush with vibrant reddish-pink to coppery red tints, making each plant look as though it’s glowing. Growing on thick, bare grey stems, this branching succulent reaches up to 70 cm in height and spread, developing a striking architectural form over time. In late winter to spring, mature rosettes produce clusters of small, buttery yellow, star-shaped flowers. As a monocarpic plant, the rosette that flowers will die, but the plant continues to live through its offsets.
Care:
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light to full sun. More light intensifies the pink edges and variegation, but protect from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
💧 Water: Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water more frequently during active growth (autumn to spring) and reduce significantly during summer dormancy.
🌱 Soil: Requires a gritty, exceptionally well-draining succulent mix with added perlite or pumice.
🌡️ Temp: Prefers 15–25°C and is not frost-hardy.
🌸 Flowering: Produces star-shaped pale yellow flowers on mature plants in late winter to spring.
⚠️ Note: Reverts to non-variegated green on stems that lose their pattern; prune these off to maintain the variegation.
Pet Friendly: ✅ Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, ingestion of large amounts may cause mild stomach upset.
Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings or offsets.
