Common Name(s): Fantasy Crassula, Variegated Jade Necklace, Crassula ‘Fantasy’ variegata
Origin: A cultivated hybrid, thought to be a variegated form related to Crassula perforata ssp. kougaensis or Crassula marnieriana.
Description:
Crassula ‘Fantasy’ is a rare and highly sought-after trailing succulent prized for its captivating miniature form and subtle variegation. This small, slow-growing plant consists of tightly stacked, fleshy, triangular leaves that clasp around thin, woody stems, creating a sculptural, snake-like or caterpillar-like appearance. Its leaves display a soft palette of pale green to blue-green, generously streaked and margined with creamy-yellow variegation. The joints between the leaf layers often blush with delicate reddish-pink tones, especially when grown in bright light, adding warmth to its elegant form. Mature plants send up slender flower stalks in late spring to summer, bearing clusters of small, tubular, pale pink to peachy-pink flowers that emerge from the upper rosettes. It offsets readily, gradually forming an attractive, trailing cluster perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or as a unique addition to any succulent collection.
Care:
☀️ Light: Requires bright, indirect light or partial shade. Protect from harsh direct sunlight, especially during midday, to prevent leaf scorch.
💧 Water: Drought-tolerant. Use the “soak and dry” method, watering thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
🌱 Soil: Needs a very well-draining, porous mix. A blend of succulent/cactus soil with added pumice, perlite, or grit is essential to prevent waterlogging.
🌡️ Temp: Prefers mild temperatures. Protect from frost and keep above 2-7°C. It is sensitive to intense summer heat and may need extra ventilation.
🌸 Flowering: Produces small, pale pink flowers on slender stems in late spring or summer.
Pet Friendly: ❌ Toxic to pets – If ingested, may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and incoordination. While not typically life-threatening, ingestion can cause significant discomfort. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings taken during spring or autumn. Allow cuttings to dry for a few days before planting in well-draining soil.
