Common Name(s): Rainbow Cactus, Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus, Ruby Rainbow Cactus, Arizona Rainbow Cactus
Origin: Native to the rocky slopes of northern Sonora and northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, where it grows on non-calcareous, gravelly hills and canyon sides

Description:
A true jewel of the cactus world, the Rainbow Cactus is a slow-growing, solitary globular cactus that rarely produces offsets. Its stem is ribbed with 15 to 26 vertical ridges and is covered in striking spines that lie almost flat against the body. This variety is particularly prized for its bright red to purple-red spines. As the plant matures, each year’s new growth produces a distinctively coloured band of spines, creating a mesmerising rainbow effect that gives the cactus its common name. Unlike the standard species, the spines of this subspecies retain their vibrant colour indefinitely and do not turn grey with age. In late spring, it produces enormous, showy magenta to bright pink flowers with a pale throat, which can reach up to 10 cm in diameter when fully expanded.

Care:
☀️ Light: Requires plenty of bright, direct sunlight to maintain its vibrant spine colour and encourage flowering. Can be acclimatised to full sun, but newly planted specimens should be introduced gradually.
💧 Water: Highly sensitive to overwatering and prone to rot. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Only water during the spring and summer growing season, and keep completely dry in autumn and winter.
🌱 Soil: Requires a gritty, exceptionally well-draining, inorganic soil mix. A mix of 70-80% mineral grit like pumice, coarse sand, or perlite is ideal to prevent waterlogging.
🌡️ Temp: Prefers warm temperatures between 25-35°C. Tolerates down to 5°C and brief periods down to -6°C if kept perfectly dry. Protect from frost and provide cool, dry conditions in winter.
🌬️ Humidity: Sensitive to high humidity. Ensure excellent air circulation around the plant, especially during winter, to prevent rot.

Pet Friendly: ✅ Non-toxic – This cactus is not known to be toxic to pets. However, its sharp spines pose a physical risk, so it should be kept out of reach of curious animals and children.

Propagation: Exclusively from seeds, as it rarely produces offsets unless the growth point is damaged
