Gymnocalycium Damsii Variegata, or Moon Cactus, is a compact cactus with distinct light and dark horizontal stripes across its round or slightly cylindrical body. It has soft, short spines along its ribs, adding texture to its vibrant green and brownish-green skin. This cactus produces delicate, funnel-shaped flowers in pale pink to reddish-purple that bloom in summer, especially on mature plants.
Native to Argentina, the Moon Cactus thrives in bright, indirect light but needs some shade during South Africa’s hottest hours. It prefers well-drained, gritty soil and should be watered sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. Keep dry and indoors during winter if temperatures drop below 7°C.
Slow-growing, this cactus reaches 4–6 cm in diameter and produces abundant side offsets that can be easily removed for propagation. Perfect for beginners, it’s both low-maintenance and visually striking.
