Common Name(s): Jade Fingers, Gollum Jade, Trumpet Jade
Origin: Native to South Africa; this cultivar is a quirky garden favourite.
Description:
A succulent straight out of a fantasy tale, Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ enchants with its tubular, trumpet-shaped leaves tipped in fiery red. Resembling tiny green claws or coral, its unique foliage grows in dense clusters, maturing into a miniature tree-like form up to 90 cm tall. Slow-growing and sculptural, it adds an otherworldly charm to windowsills, terrariums, or rock gardens. In winter, mature plants may surprise you with delicate clusters of pinkish-white star-shaped flowers—a whimsical bonus to its quirky appeal.
Care:
- ☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light (morning sun enhances red tips). Avoid harsh midday rays.
- 💧 Water: Drought-tolerant – Water only when soil is bone-dry. Overwatering = mushy leaves!
- 🌱 Soil: Gritty, well-draining mix (cactus/succulent blend + perlite).
- 🌡️ Temp: Keep above 5°C; thrives in warm, dry climates.
- ✂️ Pruning: Trim leggy stems to maintain a compact shape.
Pet Friendly: ❌ Toxic to pets – Keep away from cats and dogs. Ingestion may cause vomiting or lethargy.
