Common Name(s): Tiger Aloe, Kanniedood (Afrikaans for “Cannot Die”), Partridge Breast Aloe

Origin: Native to the arid, rocky regions of South Africa; thrives in harsh climates.

Description:
A rugged beauty with a survivor’s spirit, the Tiger Aloe stuns with dense rosettes of thick, triangular leaves striped with bold white speckles and edges. Its striking geometric pattern mimics tiger stripes, earning it a place as a sculptural showpiece in rock gardens, containers, or drought-tolerant landscapes. In winter, it sends up towering spikes of coral-red tubular flowers that attract sunbirds and pollinators—a fiery contrast to its cool-toned foliage. Tough, low-maintenance, and visually arresting, this succulent lives up to its name “Kanniedood” (Cannot Die), thriving where others falter.

Care:

  • ☀️ Light: Full sun to partial shade (4-6 hours of direct sun enhances markings).
  • 💧 Water: Drought-defying – Water sparingly, only when soil is bone-dry. Reduce to monthly in winter.
  • 🌱 Soil: Gritty, well-draining mix (cactus/succulent soil + coarse sand).
  • 🌡️ Temp: Hardy from 5–40°C; protect from prolonged frost.
  • 🌸 Flowering: After blooms fade, trim stalks to redirect energy to foliage.

Pet Friendly:  Toxic to pets – Harmful if ingested by cats or dogs. Causes vomiting or lethargy.
